JULIAN CASABLANCAS - PHRAZES FOR THE YOUNG

Yes I know I'm goin' to hell in a leather jacket. At least I'll be in another world while you're pissin' on my casket - Out of the Blue

Julian Casablancas,
lead singer of The Strokes releases his debut solo album 'Phrazes for the Young' tomorrow. The album leaked online last week, so I took a sneaky listen while I relaxed in the sun this lazy Sunday afternoon...

'Phrazes for the Young' is musically dynamic with hints of country, gospel and blues blended with modern rock experimentalism. The genre-crossing does not make the album feel cluttered or incoherent, it is in fact near perfect in its delivery. Each song is placed like a puzzle; precise yet spacious enough to appreciate without having to scream "listen to me" to get you attention. Lyrically it is very politically driven with Casablancas providing his own commentary on the world and it's failings - "If you believe in this world, you're not inviting me" (11th Dimension). Despite the dark themes, the songs are in fact more uplifting and 'happy' sounding compared to his work with The Strokes - perhaps due in part to Casablancas expecting his first son early next year. Whatever it is that Casablancas wanted to achieve with his debut solo release he has done so with creativity and class. He is a pioneer of the modern music world, with a deep appreciation and reverence for what has gone before him.

Julian Casablancas first interview in three years

With a fourth Strokes album due in 2010, and a solo career that could not have started stronger, Casablancas is a name that will likely be tossed around with the likes of Curtis, Reed, and Morrissey in the future - a true songwriting talent of our time.

R&V 2009 - Cool Kids Club

They may share their name with Chicago based hip-hop duo The Cool Kids, but these 'cool kids' are the exclusive kids of cool - two white boys from Wellington who have been killin' it across New Zealand since 2007.

Cool Kids Club have not been on the scene for long, but they have quickly carved a reputation as some of the most sought after DJ's in New Zealand. They have already opened for international artists such as The Bloody Beetroots, Ajax and Metronomy, completed a national tour to promote their winter mix, and have an unrelenting party schedule that would put a first-year on an O-Week bender to shame.

Cool Kids Club @ Sandwiches (Black & White Party)

CKC know how to bring the party! Their mixing is inventive and their energy requires no added amphetamines. Make sure you catch their set at Rhythm & Vines.

R&V 2009 - Bionic Pixie

Bionic Pixie
is the alter-ego of Auckland musician Zoe Fleury. The gimmick is that Bionic Pixie is a space cadet sent from the year 3000 to "heal the ache of love lost" in our world by creating music to synch the hearts of all those who listen, to the rhythm of her heartbeat. I enjoy this gimmick, not only for the entertaining backstory, but also because I feel like Bionic Pixie has what it takes - that if she really was a space-aged saviour figure she would one day return home to the year 3000 with a sideways smile to proclaim "mission accomplished!"

There is a captivating cuteness about 'Pixie's' performance that has a subliminal (extra-terrestrial, perhaps?) power to get toes tapping, and bodies grooving. Her fusion of electro-pop, hip-hop, and punk is energizing and original; set apart from the inundation of bandwagon bandits in this era of post-pop. Having already supported international acts Peaches and The Kills, Bionic Pixie are going to be out to make a mark at their debut Rhythm & Vines performance. They will leave your heart beating to a new (and potentially faster) rhythm.

Here's a mini-doco on Bionic Pixie

WEEZER - CAN'T STOP PARTYING

Ok... So a new Weezer track leaked last week called 'Can't Stop Partying', and you are not going to believe who makes a guest appearance. No other than Lil Wayne is back, and getting up to date with his archetypal 'feat.' credentials. This track is off their new album 'Raditude', which was released today.

'Can't Stop Partying' is actually hilarious. Rivers is waving his middle finger at everything that pop music has become of late in the same way that Ben Folds wrote 'Rockin' the Suburbs' as a big "F-YOU!" to the nu-metal era.

The fans are up-in-arms about it, and I'm certain the word "sellouts" is going to be bantered around willy nilly, but I think Weezer are the kind of band that wouldn't really care. They've always done whatever they felt like, and obviously they still are.

Check out this acoustic performance of the song

And download the actual track here

Now, go to iTunes and grab the album, it is destined for greatness!

R&V 2009 - Fake Blood

Fake Blood is the 'Dark Knight of the dance music underworld. The mystery identity behind the music released under the pseudonym 'Fake Blood' has been the best kept secret since Bruce Wayne got carried away at a 'dress up as your favourite animal' party. However, earlier this year 'Fake Blood' made his debut press appearance for an interview (that somehow managed to slip under the radar with only 600 views) with 'Kitchen Sink Radio' providing tidbits of information that help piece the puzzle together.

Watch the interview here.

It is now accepted that 'Fake Blood' is Theo Keating, who formerly produced under the name 'Touche', was a member of British hip-hop/big beat band 'The Wiseguys', and is currently a member of electronic duo 'The Black Ghosts'.

'Fake Blood' first gained attention after producing and releasing a remix for his own project The Black Ghosts called 'Anyway you choose to give it', and since then has remixed Calvin Harris, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Little Boots, The Gossip, Armand Van Helden and more. His debut single was heretic club banger 'Mars', and earlier this year he released his first EP - 'Fix Your Accent'.

His unique style of production and his dedication to the art, rather than chasing fame and fortune has set Fake Blood apart as one of the leading pioneer's of dance music. Get a hold of the free downloads and do not even think about missing his set at Rhythm & Vines 2009.

And why not check out his other project while you're at it...

R&V 2009 - The Proxy

The Proxy is Russian… and when you listen to his music it all makes sense - it’s nasty, raw and relentless. You could picture a wrinkled and weathered old man in a Ushanka and a military uniform listening to The Proxy whilst sipping on vodka and chain smoking. This is all horrendously stereotypical of course, but The Proxy has this rough and ready attitude that is unique and compelling - and distinctively Russian.

Tracks like ‘Dance in the Dark’ could be the theme music to a battle scene – with tanks, AK-47’s, and Molotov cocktails wreaking destruction. And '40 Seconds' needs no added salt with the vocal line commanding “Please, put down your weapon”. Heck, even his myspace profile picture is an animated image of a soldier letting loose with a flamethrower!

Check out this live video far a little taste of live Proxy mayhem...

The Proxy – Raven (Live)

However, there is always the chance that I’m reading too far into the music, creating historical parallels from the darkest depths of my imagination – there is always the chance that this young Russian just likes to party. His tracks have been destroying dance-floors worldwide, and he has produced remixes for dance music heavyweights such as Tiga, Digitalism, Zombie Nation and Moby. With a back catalogue of bangers already under his belt, and a debut full-length expected for 2010, The Proxy is a definite ‘must see’ at Rhythm & Vines 2009.

R&V 2009 - 2manyDjs

Rhythm & Vines is the biggest New Years celebration in New Zealand - a party located within the picturesque vineyards of the Gisbourne backcountry, the first place in the world to see the sun. I've got my ticket for this years event and at the risk of being misunderstood by using a cheeky 'PJ' - I'm so excited, I'd rather be dead!

I decided to do a little feature on each of my main draw-cards for this year, starting with Belgian DJ duo - 2manyDj's.

Now, in order to overview the story of 2manyDj's it is necessary that I resort to 'bullet point' language, as it is quite a complex little tale - heck even they stumble over their own tongues when asked to explain it in an interview.

2manyDj's are the Dewaele brothers, David and Stephen. They started the rock band Soulwax in circa 1992, releasing three studio albums; the most well known being 2004's 'Any Minute Now'. During their time touring the world as a rock band the Dewaele brothers would get bored after their shows and started performing impromptu DJ sets at clubs in whichever city they were in. After touring 'Any Minute Now' they had the idea to remix tracks from their own back catalogue. They released an album of their own remixes called 'Nite Versions' in 2005. But, unlike most bands that release remix albums, Soulwax had the audacity to perform their own remixes live and with real instruments...

Check out the 'Trailer' for their DVD Part of the Weekend Never Dies...

The subsequent tour of 'Nite Versions' became the ultimate Soulwax experience. Entitled 'Radio Soulwax', it featured Soulwax the rock band - Soulwax the electronic band playing their own remixes live, and - Soulwax playing a DJ set to conclude the night... the latter became known as 2manyDj's.

The Dewaele brothers are some of the most sought after remix artists on the planet and so far have done work for the likes of Justice, Kylie Minogue, MGMT, Robbie Williams, Daft Punk and more.

When I discovered that 2manyDj's were performing at Rhythm & Vines I literally re-enacted the two hands on cheeks scream scene from from 'Home Alone 1'... a little embarrassing. But, if youtube videos are anything to go by, I think I have every reason to be this excited for 2manyDj's.

FRANKMUSIK - COMPLETE ME

The 80's - I was kickin' it casual all over the golden era of bad haircuts, fluoro clothes, and misunderstood hip-hop icons. However, I was far too engrossed in playing 'Cops & Robbers', or 'Batman & Robin' to pay attention to what was spinning on the radio, or what discolicious music video was being premiered on the all new music television... The background music to my coming of age story was simply that - white noise lost inside my attention deficit imagination.

Perhaps, this is why 'Generation Y' is so eagerly embracing the insurgence of electro-pop/disco that is saturating the airwaves at the moment - the 80's has made its triumphant return! All us little nippers that missed out on the first wave of dance-floor fever are being heavily compensated for our loss - and boy are we making up for it!

Frankmusik is one of myriad electro-pop sensations to jump on the scene in the last year. There is nothing particularly unique about this young British lad, but his songs are a lot of fun and don't have the same indie-hipster pretentiousness as many of his scene associates. Complete Me is not a great album... There are moments of pop overindulgence when it even becomes Metro Station-esque (cringe!). But, there are some good tracks. 'In Step' boasts the catchiest chorus hook since those Kids of 88 boys dropped 'My House', and '3 Little Words' is a toe-tapping pop-a-long despite being coated in lyrical cheese. Have a look at the video, download the free tracks, and reminisce on the glory days when we didn't give a crap about anything... except having fun

RAC Vol. 1

I was introduced to RAC at a party when my friends Brad and Emma hijacked my iPod. By hijacked I mean - they unplugged it mid way through one of my favourite tracks (Proxy - Dance In The Dark) and ever so self-indulgently plugged in their own. So, I guess you could say RAC and I did not meet under the most diplomatic of circumstances, which potentially provoked my initial, subliminal disinterest.

But, time heals all wounds. And RAC was like that pesky little kid down at the park (we all know the one), that would always so tenaciously chant - "Can I have a turn?"

RAC = Remix Artist Collective. It was founded in 2007 by Andre Allen Anjo who has since recruited three other producers - Aaron Jasinksi (Seattle), Chris Angelovski (The Netherlands), and Andrew Maury (New York), who have still yet to meet in person.

The vision of Remix Artist Collective is to reinterpret and reinvent tracks, not to simply pull them apart to make them danceable. They create new incarnations of their favourite tracks without sacrificing the original instrumentation and structure that made them brilliant to begin with. Andre Anjo states, "I hope people experience the original songs in a different way that not only compliments the original, but takes them somewhere else".

RAC have already remixed an entourage of the 'who's who' in music right now, including the likes of Kings Of Leon, Bloc Party, The Shins and Radiohead. They are currently giving away a collection of previously unreleased remixes entitled Vol. 1 for free distribution online. You can listen to all nine tracks below, and if you would like to download RAC - Vol.1 for yourself there will be a link at the bottom of this post. Enjoy :)

And here's a couple of RAC mixes that aren't included in Vol. 1, but are worth checking out.

VOLCANO CHOIR - UNMAP

Volcano Choir is a collaboration from Bon Iver front-man Justin Vernon and post-rock band Collections of Colonies of Bees. ‘Unmap’ is the fruit of this friendship  – a blissful, bona fide collection of songs that will gently pry open your heart and let all that was once buried… resurface.

Not since Sigur Ros released Me› su› í eyrum vi› spilum endalaust’  have I been so moved by music. It is ambient and experimental, folk and uplifting, but above all – deeply reflective. The mournful, yet hopeful voice of Justin Vernon soars with the Colonies of Bees and takes these songs to uncharted heights.

Volcano Choir - Island, IS (Music Video)

If you enjoy Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes, Grizzly Bear, or Do Make Say Think, then Volcano Choir’s ‘Unmap’ has the potential to become your new favourite record… But be prepared for it to change you.

VAMPIRE WEEKEND - HORCHATA

...'In December, drinking Horchata - I'd look psychotic in a balaclava'

Vampire Weekend recently released the first song from their up-coming sophomore album 'Contra' due out January 11, 2010.

Horchata, for those who don't know (I had no idea!), is a milk-like drink with a number of different recipes across various continents. The one Ezra Koenig is most likely referring to is the Mexican variety comprised of rice, almonds, cinnamon, lime zest, and sugar. It is often used as a milk substitute for the lactose intolerant, is most commonly served at breakfast time, and is rumored to be a cure for the dreaded hangover. Sounds delicious!

And believe me, it is! Horchata is a tasty little treat perfect for a morning stroll or an evening with friends sipping tea on the front porch. It's quirky and cute and wouldn't sound astray on a Sufjan Stevens record (which is a good thing!). If this track is anything to go by, 'Contra' may just have become one of my most anticipated releases for this summer.

Have a listen here:

If you would like to download Horchata for your daily listening pleasure just click the little 'mp3' box on the player above, enter your email to join the Vampire Weekend mailing list and it's all yours - for free!

Now, back to drinking my green tea... in October.

FENECH-SOLER

Tip-toeing behind the likes of indie/electro-pop predecessors Passion Pit, Friendly Fires & Miike Snow are ‘Fenech Soler’ – the latest wonderkids to emerge from the UK underground. Tipped by Time Out as, “The future of white dancefloor-scorching electro-funk”, I feel safe in prophesying that these boys will be the next ‘it’ band.

Their first single ‘Lies’ is a joyride through the 80’s with funky synth lines, dance grooves and disco beats. It’s everything you love from other indie-pop luminaries fused into one – Fenech-Soler.

Their debut album, also called ‘Lies’, is due out November 2nd.

500 Days of Summer...

This has got to be the most adorable movie I've seen in a long time. And Zooey Deschanel is the cutest girl in Hollywood right now. But, one thing that really made the movie for me was the near perfect selection of music; and I don't know about anyone else but it birthed in me a new found love for 'The Smiths' (I secretly plan to swoon the love of my life by my knowledge of 'The Smiths' discography). Also, Australian indie-pop outfit 'The Temper Trap' have their single 'Sweet Disposition' featured twice in the film. If you like the sound of the single, make sure to check out their debut album 'Conditions'.

If you're still searching for the soundtrack to your summer 2009/10, look no further than the '500 Days Of Summer' Soundtrack.

BOYS NOIZE - POWER!

I had been eagerly anticipating this release ever since the first low-bitrate version of 'Jeffer' was birthed into the blogosphere.

There was always the suspicion that Power! would never live up to the hype. Before the official release there were versions of Jeffer, Starter, and Rozz Box flaunted across the blogosphere, a watermarked version of Kontact Me, a promotional/watermarked version of the ENTIRE ALBUM (if you looked hard enough), not to mention the collaboration with Erol Alkan - 'Death Suite'. Alexander Ridha was building himself an empire, upon which he would unleash his reign of Power!

It has easily been the most talked about electronic release of 2009. However, it felt as though Boys Noize had already held his cookie jar open a little too long, he was perhaps a little too generous, and maybe all the chocolate coated goodness had already been gobbled up. But, rest assured, like Hansel & Gretel, Boys Noize was just leaving a trail of crumbs for us scavengers. Power! is all that it promised to be - a much needed injection of "oomph!" into the world of dance music.

The album opens with Gax - a spacious, delicate arrangement quite unlike anything Boys Noize has released before. It lays the perfect platform to launch Kontact Me - the first single, and one hell of a banger. The robotic vocal of "Come with me... Do you remember?" is Ridha's invitation to us, the listener, to join him on this conquest.

The blog hits Starter and Jeffer are next, followed by three of the most dynamically diverse Noize tracks - Transmission, which is layered with sporadic synth sequences, slightly reminiscent of his work with Erol Alkan - Nerve, which features a Fake Blood-esque synthesizer driven by nothing more than a hand clap and a tambourine - and Trooper, which trudges along with a solid kick and aggressive tom-drum beat, with no coherent structure. While these tracks may not be suited for the dance-floor, they are an intriguing listen - don't be too hasty to hit 'skip'.

Sweet Light and Nott are a return to what Noize is known for - face melting club bangers! Fans of 2007's 'Oi Oi Oi' are going to feel right at home with these tracks. Rozz Box is a little off-putting sandwiched between these two slammers, and is the only track I would consider skipping, if only to avoid injury by attempting to dance to the awkward rhythm.

The final track is Heart Attack, and like Power! began, so it shall end - in an epic, ethereal finale. A soundscape of ambient pads, a tinkering glockenspiel, and a bass drum mimicking a heartbeat that, for the listener, is once again returning to its resting rate.

Rating: 9/10

Have a nibble on these tracks, but I recommend buying the album off iTunes.

THE BLOODY BEETROOTS - ROMBORAMA

The Bloody Beetroots describe themselves as the bastard sons of The Misfits and Daft Punk – a new breed of ‘rockstar DJ’. The Italian duo, Bob Rifo and DJ Tommy Tea successfully stomped their foot in the face of the dance world in 2008 with the release of their debut EP ‘Cornelius’, which was in the top 100 international iTunes downloads that year. ‘Romborama’ is the first full-length from The Bloody Beetroots, an intensely hyped and marketed release by the Dim Mak team. But, the album in its entirety is a let down, a case of ‘less is more’, in their case ‘more’ simply being too much.

Romborama features twenty tracks, eleven of which were already available online prior to its release. The album opens explosively with the title track with guest vocals from ‘All Leather’ screaming, “This is Romborama!” before launching into an explosive mix of warping synth, heavy drums and a haunting orchestral riff. A sound you would expect from producer Bob Rifo, a student of classical composers, and member of hardcore band ‘Rifoki’ (www.myspace.com/rifoki).

The album continues without much purpose or flow. It feels as though a large portion of the tracks were included as ‘fillers’. It’s not as though there are any tracks that are particularly bad, there is just that sense of déjà vu every time the beat drops, reminding your system that it’s time to bounce… again.

There are however, some excellent tracks on Romborama. Warp 1.9, the first single is already a dance-floor anthem with “One, two, Woo woo!” being screamed in clubs from Paris to L.A, or Rome to Auckland, if you were lucky enough to see them live at ‘The Studio’ in July. Anacletus and Theolonius (The Voodoo King) are two bone crunching bangers, House N° 84 is a tasteful digression from the balls to the wall intensity, and the Italians even expose their sensitive side on Mother. One surprise is their decision to not include Dimmakmmunication, which I considered one of their strongest pre-release ‘giveaways’.

Check out the video for WARP 1.9 (Feat. Steve Aoki)

Romboarama has all the right ingredients to be an incredible album. The Bloody Beetroots have created a fresh sound that may even be capable of converting a few Slipknot fans to dance music. It's a party record, full of tracks to jump around and shake your fist to. However, it would have had more of an impact if it were half as long. After all, it's better to have your fans wanting more, than getting bored.

This is my Romborama (cheeky, I know!)

  1. Romborama
  2. Dimmakmmunication
  3. House N° 84
  4. Awesome (Feat. Cool Kids)
  5. Anacletus
  6. Warp 1.9 (Feat. Steve Aoki)
  7. Mother
  8. Theolonius (The Voodoo King)
  9. Cornelius
  10. Warp 7.7

FOAMO

Young up-and-comer FOAMO dropped in at Auckland's 'Ink & Coherent' on Thursday. His tasty blend of dub-step and dirty, fidgety electro has seen the 21 year old gain fast recognition from some of the industry's top dogs. Having already remixed for the likes of Diplo & Laidback Luke, Franz Ferdinand and La Roux, Foamo is destined for the next wave of DJ dominators.

MSTRKRFT

MSTRKRFT are undoubtedly two of the high priests responsible for the ever-expanding worldwide dance music revival. The Canadian DJ duo have two albums (The Looks & Fist Of God) already on the ‘most played’ list of every electro-noob’s iTunes, and New Zealand fans were finally given the chance to ‘bounce’ with the best when they hit Auckland’s ‘Studio’ harder than a left hook from David Tua on Thursday.

Check out the video for their latest single ‘Heartbreaker’.
