R&V 2009 - 2manyDjs

Rhythm & Vines is the biggest New Years celebration in New Zealand - a party located within the picturesque vineyards of the Gisbourne backcountry, the first place in the world to see the sun. I've got my ticket for this years event and at the risk of being misunderstood by using a cheeky 'PJ' - I'm so excited, I'd rather be dead!

I decided to do a little feature on each of my main draw-cards for this year, starting with Belgian DJ duo - 2manyDj's.

Now, in order to overview the story of 2manyDj's it is necessary that I resort to 'bullet point' language, as it is quite a complex little tale - heck even they stumble over their own tongues when asked to explain it in an interview.

2manyDj's are the Dewaele brothers, David and Stephen. They started the rock band Soulwax in circa 1992, releasing three studio albums; the most well known being 2004's 'Any Minute Now'. During their time touring the world as a rock band the Dewaele brothers would get bored after their shows and started performing impromptu DJ sets at clubs in whichever city they were in. After touring 'Any Minute Now' they had the idea to remix tracks from their own back catalogue. They released an album of their own remixes called 'Nite Versions' in 2005. But, unlike most bands that release remix albums, Soulwax had the audacity to perform their own remixes live and with real instruments...

The subsequent tour of 'Nite Versions' became the ultimate Soulwax experience. Entitled 'Radio Soulwax', it featured Soulwax the rock band - Soulwax the electronic band playing their own remixes live, and - Soulwax playing a DJ set to conclude the night... the latter became known as 2manyDj's.

The Dewaele brothers are some of the most sought after remix artists on the planet and so far have done work for the likes of Justice, Kylie Minogue, MGMT, Robbie Williams, Daft Punk and more.

When I discovered that 2manyDj's were performing at Rhythm & Vines I literally re-enacted the two hands on cheeks scream scene from from 'Home Alone 1'... a little embarrassing. But, if youtube videos are anything to go by, I think I have every reason to be this excited for 2manyDj's.
